Mattias Skjelmose has added the Amstel Gold Race to his list palmares after defeating Tadej Pogačar and Remco Evenepoel in a thrilling sprint. On the second ascent of the Gulperberg, Julian Alaphilippe accelerated with Pogačar on his wheel, but with 42 kilometres to go, the Frenchman had to let the world champion ride away. Pogačar seemed on his way to a successful solo victory, but Evenepoel and Skjelmose had other plans. The duo caught up with the world champion in the final kilometres, after which Skjelmose proved to be the strongest in the sprint.
