Mattias Skjelmose has added the Amstel Gold Race to his palmares after defeating Tadej Pogačar and Remco Evenepoel in a thrilling sprint. On the second ascent of the Gulperberg, Julian Alaphilippe accelerated with Pogačar on his wheel, but with 42 kilometres to go, the Frenchman had to let the world champion ride away. Pogačar seemed on his way to a successful solo victory, but Evenepoel and Skjelmose had other plans. The duo caught up with the world champion in the final kilometres, after which Skjelmose proved to be the strongest in the sprint.

Record holder
The Dutchman Jan Raas dominated the Amstel Gold Race in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He is the only rider who managed to win the Dutch classic five times. His first four victories came in four consecutive editions between 1977 and 1980. Two years later, he brought his total to five wins. Raas started the Amstel Gold Race eight times in his career, and in no fewer than seven editions he finished on the podium. This earned him the nickname Amstel Gold Raas.
Herman Krott Trophy
Herman Krott, the founder of the Amstel Gold Race who passed away in 2010, is rightly known in cycling circles as “Mister Amstel Gold Race.” Upon his retirement as organizer and race director in 1995, the Amstel Brouwerij decided to forever link Herman Krott with the Amstel Gold Race. This led to the creation of the Herman Krott Trophy. Each year, Leo van Vliet, race director of the Amstel Gold Race, selects the most combative rider. The choice is therefore not based on the final result, but on the performance delivered and fighting spirit shown during the race. The winner receives the Herman Krott Trophy.
